the first first debate between mitt romney and president obama. health care is a key issue, one of the biggest, in fact, and it's back in the spotlight this week after romney said people without insurance can always just go to an emergency room. now, with barely a month to go before the election, i wanted to zero in on what's at stake here. since president obama's health care law was enacted, 3.1 million people under the age of 26 are now covered by their parents' plans, and preventive care is covered 100% by insurance companies. seniors in particular have benefitted on prescription drugs. >> seniors who fall in the coverage gap known as the doughnut hole will start getting some help. they'll receive $250 to help pay for prescriptions, and that will over time fill in the doughnut hole. >> 5.5 million seniors have saved a total of $4.5 billion on prescription drugs since it was enacted. hi also plans to slow spending on medicare. >> i've strengthened medicare. we've added years to life of medicare. we did it by getting rid of taxpayer subsidies that weren't making pea hemmier. >>

when he called for the repeal of obama care. let's watch this. >> the first step to a stronger medicare is to repeal obama care because it represents the worst of both worlds. i had a feeling there would be mixed reaction, so let me get into it. it weakens medicare for today's seniors and puts it at risk for the next generation. >> well, not too popular there. now we've got the poll that is put concrete numbers behind those boos. a new poll by "the washington post" and the kaiser family foundation shows that medicare trails only the economy as the top voting issue in the swing states of florida, ohio, and virginia. and among voters who say medicare is extremely important to their vote, obama swamps romney by, get this, 13 points. when voters in those states were asked a similar question, whom they trusted to deal with the medicare program, obama again trumps romney in all the polls. in ohio obama leads romney on medicare by 19. in florida, 15. in virginia, 13. other polls have shown president obama's advantage on medicare has grown significantly since ryan joined the ticket. so let's go

, that was done with the idea that president obama's health care legislation would go into effect and we would soon be in a regime where i think these issues will truly be mute, so i want to make that point because there is a little bit of confusion about what it is we were doing but from my perspective, what we did put in place provide a lot of requirements for businesses to fulfill in order to make sure that employees are receiving health insurance. that being said to chairman wiener's points, i do have a number of obvious changes to the findings that were recommended to us by the civil grand jury and i must preface this by saying, i respect what the grand jury said, really in part because i don't think the findings reflect the amendments we put into place at the end of last year, if i could start going through the findings one at a time, for finding number 1, about whether the jury could not identify any governmental investigation or any government investigation that reports the number of businesses and surcharges to pay for scho, i suggest the committee state we disagree partially for the

make a clean shot. and resonate with voters. my predictions -- romney will repeat his claim that obama cut $700 billion from medicare. during the primaries, the republicans used to claim that obama funded his health-care plan with $500 billion in cuts. how did it balloon to $700 billion? a simple explanation. the congressional budget office is in a new estimate based on a different and later 10-year time line. republicans decided to pick the biggest number possible. medicare -- spending is not being reduced. $700 billion -- that comes from the difference over 10 years between anticipated medicare spending, what is known as the baseline, and changes the law makes to reduce spending. the statement -- that is mostly come out of health care providers, not medicare beneficiaries. the medicare actuary has raised significant doubts as to whether any cuts would take place. they are actually a bit onerous. according to the medicare trustees' report, propose reductions in spending actual strength in the long-term health of the medicare program. in fact, house republicans adopted many of the same
